A Popular History of the Art of Music From the Earliest Times Until the Present edition by W S B William Smythe Babcock Mathews Arts Photography eBooks
Since I grew up around music, playing the piano, singing and more, I have always found myself very interested in the history of music. This book reminds me of my college textbook about music and brings back many memories of reading that book. And I found that even though I had some knowledge of the history of music, this book has very many details about the history of music starting with very early on in time!
* The section that I like the most is the section regarding HARPS. This is my favorite instrument of all. It is interesting how the author explains that harps were first began in Egypt. Love the descriptions of the different harps and the evolution of the harps over time.
This book is quite in depth and very detailed. And I found it is one that a history buff will enjoy or a music buff will enjoy. It is an excellent reference book or one that could be used for someone to read who is writing a school report about music.
Highly recommend this book!

Useful.
This is a free book, detailing the history of music. It is not a history of Rock music, it does not even mention Rock music, as it is from a period before that style of music existed. For being so old, it is a good, solid, easy-to-fathom guide to the thousands of years, before Rock n Roll. It is very long but, it's really worth your time. You will undoubtedly learn something new. Living in the modern musical scene, this is the kind of thing we need to have accessible, at all and any times! I cannot recommend it highly enough!
What I think it was interesting about this book is that it was written when Dvorak and Brahms were still alive. It gives us a good vision of how music was developed since Greece until the romantic era. It must be pointed out that the vision of the author is that of the XIX century aesthetics (the vision of what was "good" and "beautiful"). I would be very interested to know what the author would think about Debussy or Schoenberg.
This is an excellent book to read by those interested in music as a generic concept and those that are curious to know how did we get to what we hear today. Understanding how the ancient dealt with scales, harmony, Intruments and ways to control them to improve the expressiveness of the performance.
Ancient Greeks, India, China, Japan, the renascence Italy, France, etc... They are all referenced here.
I only wished the referenced illustrations were also included in this version of the book, but for this price, I guess one can ignore that bit.
Thought this was a great price for what I needed. Turns out it's very condensed, illustrations from original book are missing, and page number references are all useless because the book isn't laid out the way the original was. Not the seller's fault, just needed to make clear what was being sold, including down sides. Basically can't use it for research, mostly impossible to look anything up!
I came across this book when I was searching for books on music theory and music history. The publication date is 1891...
Oh-kay! The book is surprisingly easy to read, considering the time-shift. And it is fascinating. I have by no means read or absorbed all of it, because I am taking it slow, and because I have only had the book for a few weeks. I have always been curious about and interested in how the human musical experience evolved from the simplest of melodies and instruments into the complexities of symphony and the wildly complex workings of today. This book continues my journey of discovery.
